Murphy said she was "thrilled to find the publishers were quirky like me". "They accepted it immediately, and printed 5,000 copies, and I remember wondering how many aunts and uncles I had, and what we would do with the rest," she said in an interview with The Telegraph. However, the book proved an instant success with both critics and readers, selling out within two months of publication in 1974. Murphy continued working as a nanny until Allison & Busby's publication in 1980 of The Worst Witch Strikes Again prompted her to devote herself to writing full-time.

I think the story is a great portrayal of the power of a child’s imagination. Like Claire, my daughter is going through a phase where she gives wonderfully fantastical explanations about everyday occurrences and the line between truth and fantasy can be blurred at times. Colourful pictures and lots of discussion points about the world around us, about truth and storytelling, fun and fact, in the text. I bought it to use as a class text with Year 2 - it has a simple but effective repetition with lots of lovely vocabulary which will be great for engaging the children in writing their own versions. Great illustrations and children will relate to the simple but fun story. Use the storyboard template to make a new page for the book, in which Claire tells a new friend a different story about how she hurt her knee.

On the way she meets her friends and tells them each a different story on how she got her scrape. Was she dropped by a wolf, a slithering snake, an enormous dragon, or a hairy gorilla? Playful and creative, this is a fantastic journey of the imagination that every child can relate to. I am glad I read this lovely book before deciding to hold it back for a while as our granddaughter has suddely become lacking in confidence.. But decided to wait for christmas before giving it to her now.. As she has such a grand imagination like the little girl in the book.. It is a lovely book and so so like little children might come up with... Murphy was also known for picture books, especially the Large Family series, which detail the domestic chaos of an elephant family.

Some 22 flights out of Glasgow have been cancelled so far today while incoming planes were diverted to Edinburgh as specialist airport staff scramble to clear runway and taxiway areas of persistent snow and freezing rain. However, the milder air arriving from the south west will make some areas as warm as Spain - in stark contrast to daytime temperatures which have struggled to rise above zero over the past week-and-a-half. Jill Murphy’s character, Claire, has a very vivid imagination and her wild explanations for her injured knee include wolves, dragons, flying saucers and giants.
